What is Anti-Matter?

Anti-Matter was a fanzine that existed between 1993-1995, a compilation album released in 1996, a Punk Planet column that ran from 1997-1999, and an anthology book published in 2007.

Anti-Matter is the new online home for contemplation and hardcore conversation from the desk of Norman Brannon—perhaps even better known for having played guitar in bands like Texas is the Reason, New End Original, Shelter, 108, and Ressurection. That’s me. I am currently a touring guitarist in Thursday and trying to avoid speaking in third person.

Why subscribe?

I have been going to hardcore shows since 1987. I have been writing about hardcore and interviewing hardcore bands since 1989. I have been active in one way or another this entire time. I believe I have a unique perspective that allows me to talk about our community with the weight of history, experience, curiosity, and love. Anti-Matter’s legacy has persisted for thirty years largely because of my interview style—an intimate, conversational approach based on my conviction that, deep down, we all share different versions of the same secrets.

Anti-Matter will publish 8-10 times a month: Tuesdays are for essays. Every Thursday a new interview. Every other Sunday, you’ll find either a special feature or a post featuring the best new music of the month (and, most likely, some buried treasure from the past). Barring disaster, this is the schedule I am committing to and I hope this is plenty of a reason to subscribe!

Ultimately, this project depends on the support of readers like you to keep this work going. I believe that this work is unique and has value, and I believe that, together, we can prove that an independent, reader-supported model can be a sustainable path forward for hardcore media. As the site continues to develop over time, I plan to add features and perks for paid subscribers. For now, I hope you’ll agree that subscribing for the cost of taking me out for one cup of coffee a month is more than reasonable for the work you’ll receive in return. I will work hard to make sure my subscribers are getting their money’s worth.

Best of all, you won’t have to worry about missing anything. Every new edition of the newsletter goes directly to your inbox.
