What is Anti-Matter?

Anti-Matter was a fanzine that existed between 1993-1995, a compilation album released in 1996, a Punk Planet column that ran from 1997-1999, and an anthology book published in 2007.

Anti-Matter is the online home for contemplation and hardcore conversation from the desk of Norman Brannon—perhaps better known for having played guitar in bands like Texas is the Reason, New End Original, Shelter, 108, and Ressurection. That’s me. I currently play guitar with Thursday and try to avoid speaking in third person whenever possible.

Why subscribe?

I have been going to hardcore shows since 1987. I have been writing about hardcore and interviewing hardcore bands since 1989. I have been active in one way or another this entire time. I believe I have a unique perspective that allows me to talk about our community with the weight of history, experience, curiosity, and love. Anti-Matter’s legacy has persisted for over thirty years largely because of my interview style—an intimate, conversational approach based on my conviction that, deep down, we all share different versions of the same secrets.

Anti-Matter publishes at least seven times a month. For the first three (or four) weeks of every month, you’ll receive an essay every Tuesday and a new interview every Thursday. On the final week of every month, you’ll receive an updated round-up of the best new hardcore and community-made music called AM Radio. Barring disaster (and the occasional holiday interruption), you can count on this.

Ultimately, I depend on the support of readers like you to keep this work going. I believe that this work is singular and has value, and that, together, we can prove that an independent, reader-supported model can be a sustainable path forward for hardcore media. Free subscribers will always have access to read the most recent four weeks of content, while paid subscribers are given additional benefits—including access to the entire Anti-Matter archive at any time, the ability to join the discussion by commenting on posts, as well as discounts and exclusives for Anti-Matter merch drops and other physical releases.

Whatever level of subscription you can afford, I hope you’ll agree that the cost of taking me out for one cup of coffee a month is more than reasonable for the work you’ll receive in return. I will work hard to make sure my subscribers are getting their money’s worth.

Best of all, you won’t have to worry about missing anything. Every new edition of the newsletter goes directly to your inbox.
